WEST COAST CONFERENCE GETS PINK!

| No TrackBacks
October is upon us. Women's soccer and women's volleyball will both be deep into conference play. Our teams will face one another on the fields and on the courts and test their skills amidst the rivalries...but beyond the sports action is another reason our teams are coming together. It's October and it's "Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This year, all nine WCC women's soccer teams and all nine WCC women's volleyball teams will host a "PINK" match in October to promote breast cancer awareness in their own unique ways. Some will dress their fields and gyms up in pink. Others will reach out to their communities to fundraise. Some will share personal stories about families and friends. But regardless of how they will be working to benefit the cause, these collegiate athletes will be competing for reasons beyond themselves, their teams, and their schools.

As a conference, women's soccer will promote the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walks in their neighborhoods as part of the American Cancer Society's mission to "save lives from cancer and create a world with more birthdays by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back against the disease." Women's volleyball will participate in the "DigPink" campaign to help benefit the SideOut Foundation and other local breast cancer research organizations.

All in all, making October "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" a success is a collective effort, and our WCC teams are committed to working together to achieve that goal.

If YOU would like to get involved, please visit cancer.org, the American Cancer Society's website to find a local "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk in your area. Also, please log on to the SideOut Foundation's website to learn more about what you can do to help.

Also, we invite you to support our teams and the "PINK" campaign at the following matches in your area:

WCC Women's Soccer Among the Nation's Best

| No TrackBacks

This week on "Inside the WCC," we showcase the elite status of women's soccer in the West Coast Conference. Three WCC women's soccer teams have a national championship in the last 10 years, which is more than both the Pac 10 and Big East in that time span.

Click here to watch this week's feature.

With as many as three teams in the national polls at once this year and four different teams making an appearance in the rankings this season, the strong tradition of women's soccer in the West Coast Conference lives on. Pepperdine is currently ranked #8 in the latest NSCAA national rankings.

Conference play begins October 6 with two matches, including Portland traveling to Provo, Utah to take on BYU. That match will be televised on FOX Soccer at 6:00 p.m. The Cougars have made an NCAA appearance in 13 out of the 14 last seasons.

The City. Frisco. The City By the Bay... A few of the nicknames for the city of San Francisco, sometimes referred to as the most beautiful city in the world.

WCCsports.com had a chance to see some of it, including the University of San Francisco campus, courtesy of USF cross country runners senior Tyler Alvarez and junior Sophie Curl.

TPT: Top Play Tuesday

| No TrackBacks
Last year during basketball season, the West Coast Conference came at you with our brand new "WCC Weekend Rewind," highlighting the previous week's action.

This fall, we bring another first: Top Play Tuesday. But here's the catch: our WCCsports.com cameras can't be everywhere at once. That's why this feature is carried by all nine schools in the Conference. From Provo, Utah to Portland, Oregon, every school will provide us with its best plays and shots from the week that was, then we will cut it up, put some music behind it, and bam (!): Top Play Tuesday is made.

With that said, here is the first installment of Top Play Tuesday .

Stay tuned every Tuesday this fall to see what our schools are doing on the pitch and on the court...

Ch-ch-changes

| No TrackBacks

Times have changed in the communications industry, as I'm sure you've noticed.  We sure have.  The traditional media relations/sports information position has shifted in recent times, and more focus has been placed on video content.  In 2010, we made the decision to adjust our resources here at the WCC office accordingly.  Our awesome staff is still in place, but we're taking a different approach.

As the new school year begins, perhaps you've begun to see some changes in the way we do things.  The basics - scores, schedules, standings stats - will still be on WCCsports.com.  That won't change.  But we won't be writing as much original content; instead, we'll be showing it to you.  Instead of the traditional weekly game notes (those have been condensed), we're spending our time and energy on social media channels.  Do you follow us on Twitter?  Do you Like the WCC on Facebook?  If so, I'm sure you've noticed a more concerted effort to connect with you, our fans.  And we thank you for the feedback we've gotten to this point.

If you were paying attention to the WCC last year, you noticed we produced a lot more video content than ever before.  You saw expanded coverage at our championships, you know about our weekly basketball show, The Road to Las Vegas.  We're still going to give you that content, but now, we're going to produce a whole lot more.

Beginning today, we'll have a weekly video feature on WCCsports.com (watch the preview here).  Sometimes it will be a student-athlete feature or a game preview.  Other weeks we'll have historical content that looks back at our rich history.  We'll also continue to give you access to our games and teams that you can't get anywhere else (like our behind-the-scenes of an ESPNU telecast piece from last year).  And every Tuesday on our site, we'll bring you our Plays of the Week from around the WCC.  So be sure to check back frequently for new content.

Also, be sure to Like our Facebook page.  There, we'll have even more exclusive video content, along with FANtastic Friday contests every first Friday of the month, and other unique prizes throughout the school year.  You never know when it'll be your chance to win.

Do you have an intriguing story idea for us?  Let us know!  As always, I welcome your feedback.  Please contact me via the link below.
