Day One Complete at 2011 WCC Golf Championships

HOLLISTER, Calif. - After one day and two rounds of play, the San Francisco men's golf team and the Pepperdine women's team sit atop the respective leaderboards at the 2011 West Coast Conference Golf Championships at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. The Waves are in search of their tenth consecutive WCC title.

The Dons shot a team total of 565 on a day featuring very heavy winds. Sophomore Taylor Travis leads a competitive field after the first day of action. Travis paced USF with a total score of 137 (68-69) to post a -7 heading into the second and final day of the Championships tomorrow. Teammate Ji Hwan Park sits second with a 139 (70-69), just two strokes behind Travis.

Led by senior Andrew Putnam's 140 (68-72), Pepperdine shot a 575 to finish Monday's action in second place - ten strokes behind San Francisco.

On the women's side, Pepperdine put together a strong performance, building a 26-stroke advantage over second place Gonzaga heading into the final round of play on Tuesday. Pepperdine holds the two top spots after day one, with freshman Grace Na atop the leaderboard with a two-under-par 142 (74-68). Teammate Danielle Kang, a sophomore, sits just one stroke in back of Na with 18 holes remaining.

The shot of the day belonged to Saint Mary's sophomore Mac McClung, who sank a hole-in-one on the 16th in the opening round. McClung used his eight iron on the par three for his third-ever ace and his first in a competitive tournament.
