BYU Wins Fifth Consecutive WCC Commissioner's Cup

June 08, 2017

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. -- Brigham Young University won the 2016-17 West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the WCC institution enjoying the most success during conference play. This marks the fifth consecutive Commissioner's Cup victory for the Cougars in their sixth year of Conference membership.

BYU's win matches the University of San Diego for the most overall (5) and consecutive (5) Commissioner's Cup victories. The Toreros won five straight from 2008-2012. Pepperdine University (2002-04) rates third with three while Santa Clara University (2005 and 2007) and Loyola Marymount University (2006) also own cup triumphs.

For the second straight year, BYU set a new record for margin of victory, tallying 105.5 points. Staked by seven regular season championships and one runner-up finish, the Cougars posted a 24-point win against runner-up Gonzaga, which matched its highest overall finish with 81.5 points (2013-14). Last season BYU registered a 21-point win against runner-up Saint Mary's College.

En route to winning the Commissioner's Cup, BYU also swept the Men's and Women's All-Sports Trophies for the fourth time and the second year in a row (2012-14, 2015-17). The Cougars won the Women's All-Sports Trophy for the fifth consecutive year. With 61 points, the Cougars posted a 10.5 point win against runner-up Gonzaga. With 44.5 points, BYU also captured the Men's All-Sports Trophy for the fourth time in the last five seasons, posting a 7.5 point win against Saint Mary's.

The awards were handed out as part of the eighth annual West Coast Conference Honors Dinner, held Wednesday night at the Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach and Marina Hotel in Redondo Beach, Calif.

The West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup is an all-sports award presented at the end of each academic year to the league's top performing school in conference play and is based on a point system, reflecting the finish of each team in conference play. The institution with the highest point total after combining the men's and women's point totals is honored with the Commissioner's Cup.

In 2016-17, the Cougars captured outright West Coast Conference championships in men's cross country, men's and women's golf, softball and volleyball to go along with shared titles in women's soccer and baseball. The Bulldogs won outright championships in men's and women's basketball and women's rowing to go along with a shared baseball title.

Overall, BYU finished atop the Commissioner's Cup standings with 105.5 points, besting second place Gonzaga (81.5 points) and third place Saint Mary's (81.0 points). Loyola Marymount finished fourth (79.0), while Pepperdine and San Diego (72.5) shared fifth place. University of Portland (69.5), the University of San Francisco (68.0), Santa Clara (65.0 points) and University of the Pacific (50.5 points) rounded out the 2016-17 standings.
