SAN JOSE, Calif. -
The University of San Diego was awarded with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Community Service Award as part of the ninth annual West Coast Conference Honors Dinner, held Wednesday night at the Dolce Hayes Mansion in San Jose, Calif.

The SAAC Community Service Award is presented annually to the institution that has the highest average of community service hours per student-athlete.

Student-athletes at the University of San Diego logged over 5,000 hours of community service with an average of over 13 hours per individual for the 2017-18 season.

Some of the initiatives of the Toreros included each athletics team sponsoring a disadvantaged family during the winter holidays to help provide gifts for the family members. The San Diego SAAC also hosted a bonfire as well as a canned food drive to benefit people in the surrounding community and gathered for a "tote" fundraiser.

San Diego is the second institution to win the SAAC Community Service Award after Saint Mary's claimed the inaugural honor in 2017.
