West Coast Conference holds Executive Council, Presidents' Council meetings

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The West Coast Conference held its annual Executive Council and Presidents' Council Meetings on June 4-7 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Significant action at the meetings included: modification of the men's and women's basketball championship format; approval of Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif. as the location of the 2013 WCC Baseball Championship; and approved the addition of softball as the Conference's 14th sport beginning in 2013-14.
The series of meetings included the Presidents, Athletic Directors, Senior Woman Administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives from all 10 institutions, including the University of the Pacific - which will officially join the Conference on July 1, 2013 - as well as the West Coast Conference staff. Both groups were briefed on national issues, including conference realignment, by WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. The Executive Council also heard presentations from Nick Dawson, ESPN Director of Programming and Acquisitions, as well as from Title IX expert Janet Judge, President of Sports Law Associates.
NCAA President Mark Emmert was in attendance at a joint Executive Council and Presidents' Council session, discussing academic reform, the changing collegiate athletics landscape, and the current state of the NCAA governance model. Emmert was also present at the WCC Honors Dinner, where he helped recognize outgoing NCAA Division I Board of Directors member, Father William Beauchamp, President of the University of Portland.
The following morning, Emmert met with the WCC Presidents in a private session.
In addition to President Emmert's appearance, the meetings were highlighted by the third annual WCC Honors Dinner, which included the presentation of student-athlete academic awards, institutional and individual sportsmanship awards, and culminated with the presentation of the 2011-12 West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup to the University of San Diego.
