SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- No. 10 BYU secured its third outright West Coast Conference regular season title while No. 11 San Diego joins the Cougars in the 2016 NCAA Tournament field. Both BYU and the Toreros placed three on this year’s All-WCC First Team while four programs captured major individual honors this season as announced by the conference office.

San Diego senior All-American Lisa Kramer was voted the 2016 Player of the Year. Loyola Marymount All-American junior Sarah Sponcil secured WCC Defensive Player of the Year honors while BYU’s McKenna Miller collected WCC Freshman of the Year accolades. Portland head coach Brent Crouch was selected as the Coach of the Year by his peers. All four major individual awards - including the all-conference and all-freshman teams - were voted on solely by the WCC's 10 head coaches.

A two-time All-WCC selection, Kramer led the league in kills during conference play (4.11) and was second in points per set (4.33) and eighth in hitting percentage (.305) as the primary attack option for a team ranked as high as No. 5 nationally in 2016. Kramer is the 10th Torero to earn Player of the Year honors and the first since Chloe Ferrari was tabbed in 2013. A USD student-athlete has now captured Player of the Year honors five times since 2008.

Sponcil becomes the first Lion to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors since Betsi Metter accomplished the feat in 2011. A highly versatile player, Sponcil averaged 3.47 kills per set to go along with 2.98 digs and 0.34 blocks per game. The All-American posted 11 double-double matches during WCC action (18 overall) and closed out the season with three consecutive, capped by an 18-kill, 17-dig outing against No. 10 BYU. For the season, Sponcil recorded 15 double-digit dig nights (20 overall).

Miller made an immediate impact on the Cougars, ranking third among WCC leaders in kills per set (3.73) and sixth in total points (3.99) during league action. In her first conference campaign, Miller posted 13 matches with double-digit kills, including four with 20 or more. Miller is the third Cougar since 2012 to take the honor.

In just three seasons, Crouch has transformed the Pilot program. In another record-setting season on the Bluff, the Pilots posted a 17-13 overall record and a 10-8 slate, good for a share of third place in the WCC standings. Portland recorded the second and third top-25 victories in program history, both coming during league play against No. 11 BYU (10/13/16) and a road triumph at No. 7 San Diego (11/10). It is the first Coach of the Year honor in program history.

The 2016 season was highly competitive and no fewer than seven programs managed to place at least one student-athlete on the 12-member All-WCC First Team. BYU and San Diego each placed three on the squad, while Loyola Marymount had a pair of selections.

Both BYU and San Diego open play in the NCAA Tournament Friday, December 2. No. 10 BYU captured a No. 13 national seed and will host the first two rounds, opening against Ivy League champion Princeton. No. 11 San Diego will travel to Los Angeles to compete in the first round at UCLA. The Toreros will open against Baylor at Pauley Pavilion.
