SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Beach Volleyball made its West Coast Conference debut Friday at Ocean Park Beach on day one of the 2016 WCC Championship. The opening day of the inaugural event featured eight matches on 10 courts with a stunning backdrop.
No. 1 seed Pepperdine survived upset-minded No. 4 Saint Mary’s in a 3-2 win. The Gaels won matches at No. 1 and No. 2 against the Waves. Pepperdine takes on No. 6 Loyola Marymount in the first match on Saturday, set for a 9:00 a.m. first serve.
LMU posted two of Friday’s biggest upsets – both against Bay Area foes – dispatching No. 3 Santa Clara 4-1 before sweeping No. 2 San Francisco 5-0. The Dons bounced back to advance to Saturday opening with a 5-0 sweep of No. 7 Portland and knocked out No. 5 Pacific 4-1.
Saint Mary’s advanced to day two of the championship with a 3-2 win against Pacific in the opener and overcame heavy winds to oust Santa Clara 4-1 in Friday’s finale.
