SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Four West Coast Conference teams earned postseason berths. Regular season co-champion and tournament champion Gonzaga is the lone WCC representative in the NCAA Tournament, while BYU and Saint Mary’s captured NIT berths. Pepperdine earned its second straight CBI Postseason tournament bid.
Gonzaga will make its 18th consecutive NCAA appearance after marching to its fourth straight WCC Tournament title with an 85-75 victory against Saint Mary’s Tuesday in Las Vegas. The 18 straight NCAA berths for the Bulldogs extends the nation’s fourth-longest streak behind Kansas, Duke and Michigan State.
No. 11 Gonzaga (26-7) takes on No. 6 Seton Hall (25-8) Thursday, March 17 in Denver at the Pepsi Center.
Saint Mary’s, (27-5) the 2016 WCC regular season co-champion will make its third straight NIT appearance (fifth overall) and will host WAC regular season champion New Mexico State (23-10) Tuesday, March 15 in Moraga. The Gaels and Aggies will appear live on ESPN2. Saint Mary’s is set to make its ninth consecutive postseason trip.
BYU will make its school-record 11th straight postseason trip when it hosts UAB Wednesday, March 16 in the Marriott Center. The Cougars (23-10) return to the NIT for the first time since advancing to the national semifinals in 2013. BYU and UAB (26-6) will air live on ESPNU at 7:00 p.m. PT.
This marks the second time in three seasons that two WCC programs have earned NIT berths and the fourth time overall (1988-89, 2014 & 2016).
Pepperdine makes its second straight postseason foray into the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). The Waves (18-13) will travel to Eastern Washington (17-15) to take on the Eagles Wednesday, March 16 at Reese Court at 6:00 p.m.
