WCC Announces January Players Of The Month

CO-MEN'S BASKETBALL - Jeremy Pargo, Gonzaga
Gonzaga University sophomore guard Jeremy Pargo enjoyed an outstanding month, leading the Bulldogs to a 7-2 overall record and guiding the Zags to first place in the conference standings with a 6-1 league mark. For the month of January, Pargo averaged 13.3 points per game, while handing out a WCC-best 5.8 assists per game. In addition, the Chicago, IL native grabbed 5.0 rebounds per game and ranked second in the WCC with 2.2 steals per contest. The 6-2 sophomore guard reached double figures in scoring in eight of the Zags' nine games and handed out five or more assists in seven contests. During the month, he set career highs in points (Jan. 31 vs. Stanford), rebounds (Jan. 8 vs. Pepperdine), and assists (Jan. 27 vs. San Francisco). Pargo was instrumental in the Zags' double-overtime win at No. 23 Stanford to close out the month. He scored a career-high 23 points, 11 coming in the second overtime period, and grabbed seven boards in the win over the Cardinal.

CO-MEN'S BASKETBALL - Diamon Simpson, Saint Mary's
Saint Mary's College sophomore Diamon Simpson turned in a brilliant month of January, guiding the Gaels to a 5-2 record. For the month, Simpson ranked fourth in scoring and rebounding with 17.1 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per game, while pacing the conference in blocks with 2.7 blocks per game. He was the only player in the conference to rank in the top five in those respective categories. The Hayward, CA native earned WCC Player of the Week twice for his performance in January, taking home the award in back-to-back weeks (1/16-1/23). The 6-7 forward scored in double figures in six of the Gaels' seven games and scored 20 or more points on three different occasions, including a career-high 29 points in SMC's win over Gonzaga. He also added a season-high 11 rebounds versus the Zags, and grabbed 10 or more boards three times during the month.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Stephanie Hawk, Gonzaga
Gonzaga University's Stephanie Hawk enjoyed an outstanding month of January, as the senior propelled the Zags to the top of the conference standings with a perfect 7-0 start to WCC play. Hawk averaged a double-double on the month with 16.1 points per game, and a conference-high 10.6 boards per contest. The senior also paced the circuit with 15 blocks, averaging 2.14 per game, and moved into second place on the Bulldogs' career blocks chart with 151. Hawk, who recorded double-doubles in six of Gonzaga's seven games during the month of January, scored a career-high 33 points in an overtime victory against Santa Clara and became just the 12th player in GU program history to eclipse the 1,000 career points mark in the win. The forward shot 44.7 percent (34-for-76) from the field for the Zags and 81.5 percent (44-for-54) from the charity stripe, and garnered WCC Player of the Week honors twice during the month. Hawk also pitched in with 11 assists and 10 steals as the Zags extended their current winning streak to eight games.
