SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- With only men's and women's basketball in full action during January, the West Coast Conference would like to award Player of the Month honors for the month of January.
MEN'S BASKETBALL - Mickey McConnell, Saint Mary's, SR, Guard
Senior Mickey McConnell was named WCC Player of the Week three times during the month of January. McConnell averaged 18.9 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. He registered solid 2.6 assist/turnover ratio and scored a career-high 32 points at Portland after a 27-point performance, including the game-winner with 1.2 seconds on the clock at Gonzaga two nights earlier. McConnell made more than 50 percent of his 41 three-point attempts in the eight games during the month, scored in double-figures in seven of the eight games and surpassed 20 points three times. He also shot .857 from the free throw line and .558 from the field, an incredible mark for a point guard with nearly half his attempts coming from outside three-point range.
Five of the eight Saint Mary's games during the month were on the road. His team went 6-2 for the month of December and was nationally ranked in three of the four weeks. McConnell led the team in scoring in five of the eight games and led in assists six times. He was a Bob Cousy Award finalist, given to the nation's top point guard, and national player of the week on January 3.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Courtney Vandersloot, Gonzaga, SR, Guard
Senior guard Courtney Vandersloot helped Gonzaga to a perfect 8-0 record in the month of January by averaging nearly a double-double of 19.1 points and 9.9 assists per contest. She also averaged 2.9 rebounds and 2.9 steals while shooting 48.7 percent from the floor and 87.8 percent at the charity strip. Vandersloot scored 20-plus points in five of the eight contests and registered three double-doubles. She also was the nation's assist leader throughout the month of January. Vandersloot started the month off with a blistering shooting night against Southern Utah, where she hit 8-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point arc and both free throwattempts for a game-high 20 points. She then added 12 assists, with no turnovers and made three steals in 25 minutes of action. Vandersloot closed out the month tallying double-doubles at both Saint Mary's and San Diego. She went off for 23 points and had a hand in 13 other baskets in the Bulldogs 106-77 win at second-place Saint Mary's and then finished with 12 points and a season-tying high 14 assists in the Zags 70-49 win over San Diego. Vandersloot was named WCC Player of the Week twice in the month of January.
