LMU's Robyn Baker Ready For Last College Season

Loyola Marymount senior and Palm Desert High School graduate Robyn Baker is devoting herself to closing out her collegiate tennis career with a bang.Baker's tenacious style of play has brought her success in collegiate doubles play. She is half of the top doubles team for the Lions. Baker and her partner Pavla Mesterova opened the season with a preseason ranking of 29th in the collegiate doubles rankings.

In her first season at LMU, she competed in doubles with her older sister, Jennifer.

The pair were ultimately recognized as All-West Coast Conference honorable mention selections in doubles. Robyn also picked up honorable mention for her singles play in the same season.

As a three-year team captain of the Palm Desert tennis team, Baker was a two-time All-CIF selection. In addition, she was a two-time Desert Valley League champion in singles and in doubles as a freshman.

At the age of 16, Baker reached No. 1 in Southern California and No. 5 nationally.

She also earned the wild card qualifying round of the Pacific Life Open tournament in 2001 and 2003.

She attributes her introduction to the sport to her parents, having played recreationally as well as traveling and watching her older sister play.

"My experience at LMU has definitely been a great one," Baker said. "I owe a lot to my coach, Jamie Sanchez. He's been inspirational to me and encouraged me for the last 3 years."

Baker looks forward to the season, which started Thursday against Cal State Fullerton.

In the win, Baker cruised to a straight-set victory in singles, 6-2 6-2.

Baker's ultimate goal in her last year on the team is for the Lions to win the West Coast Conference championship after two third-place finishes and one second-place finish in her career. She also hopes to get in the singles rankings before the end of the season.
