WCC Tournament Greats: Day 8

March 1, 2006

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - With the West Coast Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament tipping off this Thursday, the WCC takes a look back at some of the event's all-time great performers. Each day, leading up to the day before the championships begin (March 1), the WCC will recognize one male and one female former student-athlete for their achievements during the WCC Tournament. This year's event marks the 20th anniversary of the men's tournament and the 15th anniversary of the women's tournament. On the eve of the WCC Tournament, the WCC looks back at former WCC Tournament greats Steve Nash of Santa Clara and Ashley Burke of Gonzaga.

WCC Tournament All-Time Great Performers: Day 8

SANTA CLARA - Steve Nash (1993-1996)
As a freshman in 1993, Steve Nash guided the Santa Clara Broncos to the second WCC Tournament title in program history. Nash dropped in a then-career-high 23 points in the WCC Tournament finale in the Broncos' 73-63 win over Pepperdine.

For the tournament, Nash averaged 17.0 points per game and connected on 10-of-13 three-point attempts en route to tournament MVP honors. Nash is the first and only freshman in WCC history to take home the events top honor.

The Victoria, B.C. native was a key player in the 15th seeded Broncos' stunning 64-61 upset of No. 2 seeded Arizona. Nash went on to earn WCC all-tournament honors in 1995.

GONZAGA - Ashley Burke (2002-2005)
A two-time All-WCC Tournament selection, Ashley Burke led Gonzaga to two straight WCC Tournament championship games and three straight semifinal appearances.

Burke had an unbelievable run as a senior in 2005, dropping in 28 points and pulling down eight rebounds in the Zags' 77-66 loss to Santa Clara in the championship game. She finished the tournament with 59 points in two games, just short of the tournament record of 62 points set by Pepperdine's Rasheeda Clark in 1999.

She scored 112 points in eight WCC Tournament games (14.0 ppg) during her four years in Spokane, putting her in seventh place on the WCC's all-time tournament scoring chart.
