WCC PLAYERS OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY SELECTED
Men's Tennis - Scott Doerner, Pepperdine University
Pepperdine senior Scott Doerner was instrumental inhelping the Waves to the finals of the ITA NationalTeam Indoor Championships. During the month ofFebruary, Doerner posted a 3-2 record with his twolosses coming to No. 5 Ludovic Walter of Duke and No.3 Benjamin Kohlloeffel of UCLA. His month washighlighted with a straight sets win over #12 ErlingTveit of Mississippi to help the Waves advance to thesemifinals of the Indoor Championships.
Men's Tennis - Pierrick Ysern, University of San Diego
A season-ending injury required Ysern to sit out forthe fall 2005 season, but he has made an immediateimpact upon his return. Ysern is currently undefeatedin singles, playing at the No. 1 spot. He posted aperfect 5-0 record during the month of February,winning each match in straight sets. Ysern played acrucial role in USD's 4-3 upset of then-18th rankedUSC, defeating the Trojans' top player in straightsets.
Women's Tennis - Pavla Mesterova, Loyola Marymount University
Women's Tennis Singles Player of the Month LoyolaMarymount's Pavla Mesterova went undefeated in singlesplay during the month of February. She racked up aperfect 9-0 record at the Lions' top singles spot.Each victory was in straight sets at the No. 1 spot asshe did not drop a set during the month. Four of hernine wins were against opponents from ranked programs.
Men's Golf - Alex Coe, Pepperdine University
Pepperdine senior Alex Coe competed in two tournamentsduring the month of February and registered a pair oftop 10 finishes. Coe tied for eighth at the 21-team UHHilo Intercollegiate and tied teammate J.J, Wood for10th place at the 15-team Ashworth CollegiateInvitational. Coe's final-round 67 helped Pepperdinecapture the Ashworth Collegiate Invitational,registering a nine-shot victory over host USC. In sixrounds, Coe posted a 70.17 stroke average and recordfour rounds in the 60s. Coe currently leads the28th-ranked Waves with a 71.95 stroke average in 21rounds.
Women's Golf - Eileen Vargas, Pepperdine University
Pepperdine junior Eileen Vargas posted a pair of top15finishes in two tournaments during February. She tiedfor 12th at the prestigious Northrop Grumman RegionalChallenge and tied for 14th at the Arizona WildcatInvitational that included 14 teams ranked in the top25, including No. 1 and defending national championDuke. In six rounds, she posted a 73.17 strokeaverage, leading the Waves to seventh place finishesin both tournaments.
Women's Golf - Mary Kate Morgan, Gonzaga University
Gonzaga junior Mary Kate Morgan made history duringthe month of February, becoming the first GU women'sgolfer to win a major tournament when she shot aneven-par 72 Sunday to win the Red Rock Invitational bytwo strokes on February 26th. Morgan finished with a4-over-par 148 to defeat first-round leader SophiaChoi of Northern Arizona University.
