BYU maintains lead in race for WCC Commissioner's Cup

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- After the conclusion of the 2011-12 West Coast Conference basketball season, WCC newcomer Brigham Young University maintains its lead in the race for the 2011-12 West Coast Conference Commissionerʼs Cup - awarded annually to the WCC institution garnering the most success during conference play. After finishing in a second place tie in women's basketball and earning seven points for a third place finish on the men's side, the Cougars maintain a three and a half point edge over the University of San Diego, while Saint Mary's College has climbed into third place.

On the strength of its men's basketball title, Saint Mary's now sits atop the men's all-sports trophy race with 21 points. The University of Portland is second, with 16.5 points, while three teams are trailing the Pilots by just a half-point. BYU, Loyola Marymount, and San Francisco all have 16 points on the men's side.

BYU and San Diego are tied in the women's all-sports trophy race, with 28.0 points each. Both the Cougars and the Toreros - winners of the last four Commissioner's Cups - tied for second place in the women's basketball regular season. Pepperdine University is third with 24.5 points on the women's side.

Overall, the Cougars have 44.0 Commissioner's Cup points after the basketball season. The Cougars lead San Diego, which has 40.5 points. Saint Mary's sits third, with 37.0 points, followed by the University of San Francisco with 35.5 points. Portland is fifth with 33.0 points, followed by Santa Clara University with 32.0 points and Gonzaga University with 31.5 points. Loyola Marymount University (30.0) and Pepperdine (28.0) round out the standings.

The next update in the race for the Commissioner's Cup will come following the 2012 West Coast Conference Golf Championships, held April 16-18 at San Juan Oaks Golf Course in Hollister, Calif.
