BYU Holds Lead in Race for WCC Commissioner's Cup Entering Spring

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – At the conclusion of the 2013-14 West Coast Conference men’s and women’s basketball seasons, Brigham Young University holds the top spot in the race for the 2013-14 West Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup – awarded annually to the WCC institution garnering the most success during conference play.  With two WCC championships and strong basketball finishes, the Cougars have earned 54.0 Cup points entering the spring.  Gonzaga University has moved into second place with 48.5 points, thanks to championships in both men’s and women’s basketball. 

Gonzaga holds the top spot in the men’s all-sports trophy race, with 25.0 points.  The University of San Francisco is second on the men’s side, with 20.5 points and Loyola Marymount University is thirs with 19.0 men’s points.  

BYU leads the women’s all-sports trophy race in commanding fashion, with 35.5 points entering the spring.  The University of San Diego sits second, with 26.0 points.  Both Gonzaga and the University of Portland are tied for third, with 23.5 points.  

Overall, the Cougars have 54.0 Commissioner’s Cup points after the winter season, which includes menʼs and womenʼs cross country, menʼs and womenʼs soccer, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball. Gonzaga is second with 48.5 points, and Portland and San Francisco are tied for third with 42.0 points each.  Saint Mary’s College is fifth overall with 37.5 points, and San Diego is sixth (36.5 points). Santa Clara University (35.5 points), Loyola Marymount (35.0 points), Pepperdine University (27.0 points) and University of the Pacific (20.0 points) round out the standings. 

The next update in the race for the Commissioner's Cup will come after the menʼs and womenʼs golf championships, (April 14-16, Bremerton, Wash.) and men’s and women’s tennis championships (April 23-26, San Diego) have been completed. 

BYU captured the 2012-13 Commissioner’s Cup, snapping an unprecedented string of five consecutive won by San Diego.
