BYU Holds Lead in Race for WCC Commissioner's Cup Entering Spring

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- At the conclusion of the 2012-13 West Coast Conference men's and women's basketball seasons, Brigham Young University holds the top spot in the race for the 2012-13 West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup - awarded annually to the WCC institution garnering the most success during conference play. With two WCC championships and strong basketball finishes, the Cougars have earned 46.0 Cup points entering the spring. The University of San Diego has surged into second place overall with 40.0 points led by their recent second place women's basketball finish.

Gonzaga University and Saint Mary's College are tied for first place in the men's all-sports trophy race with 19.0 points each. Gonzaga earned nine Cup points for its first place men's basketball finish, while Saint Mary's received eight. The University of Portland (17.5 points) and Santa Clara University (17.0 points) are just off the pace in the men's race.

BYU leads the women's all-sports trophy race, with 31.0 points. In addition to first place finishes in both volleyball and soccer, the Cougars posted a third place finish in women's cross country and a share of third in women's basketball. San Diego is second in the women's race with 24.5 points.

Overall, the Cougars have 46.0 Commissioner's Cup points after the winter season, which includes menʼs and womenʼs cross country, menʼs and womenʼs soccer, women's volleyball, and men's and women's basketball. San Diego is second with 40.0 points, and Portland and Santa Clara are tied for third with 38.0 points each. Gonzaga is fifth overall with 37.5 points, and Saint Mary's is sixth (35.5 points). The University of San Francisco (32.0 points), Loyola Marymount University (28.5 points), and Pepperdine University (16.5 points) round out the standings.

The next update in the race for the Commissioner's Cup will come after the menʼs and womenʼs golf championships, held April 15-17 at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.

San Diego has captured an unprecedented five straight WCC Commissioner's Cups.
