BYU retains lead in race for Commissioner's Cup

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- After the conclusion of the 2012 West Coast Conference golf championships, WCC newcomer Brigham Young University maintains its lead in the race for the 2011-12 West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup - awarded annually to the WCC institution garnering the most success during conference play. After earning 12 combined points at the golf championship, the Cougars hold a four and a half point edge over the University of San Francisco, which has climbed into second place.

After capturing its first men's golf title in school history on Wednesday, Saint Mary's College has widened its lead atop the men's all-sports trophy race with 30.0 points. With its second place finish in golf, San Francisco now sits second on the men's side with 24.0 points. BYU is third with 23.0 points, and Gonzaga University is fourth with 21.0 points.

Pepperdine University has surged ahead to take over the top spot in the race for the Women's All-Sports Trophy. After winning the WCC women's golf championship for the 11th straight year, Pepperdine now has 33.5 women's points. BYU is just off the pace with 33.0 women's points, while the University of San Diego has 28.0 points.

Overall, BYU has 56.0 Commissioner's Cup points after the golf championships. The Cougars lead San Francisco, which has 51.5 points. Saint Mary's remains in third place, with 46.0 points, followed closely by San Diego with 45.5 points. Gonzaga is fifth with 44.5 points, followed by Pepperdine with 40.5 points and Santa Clara University with 40.0 points. Loyola Marymount University (34.0) and the University of Portland (33.0) round out the standings.

The next update in the race for the Commissioner's Cup will come following the 2012 West Coast Conference Tennis Championships, held April 25-28 at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
