BYU increases its lead in race for WCC Commissioner's Cup

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- After the conclusion of the WCC men's and women's golf championships, as well as the men's and women's tennis regular season, Brigham Young has increased its lead to 11.5 points in the race for the 2012-13 West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup - awarded annually to the WCC institution garnering the most success during conference play. By earning 25 total points in the sports of men's and women's golf and tennis, the Cougars have earned 71.0 Cup points through April's competition. Santa Clara University has climbed into second place overall with 59.5 points after winning a share of the women's tennis regular season championship.

Saint Mary's College remains in first place in the men's all-sports trophy race with 32.0 points. BYU is second with 29.0 points, while the University of San Diego and the University of San Francisco are just off the pace in the men's race, with 28.5 points each.

BYU leads the women's all-sports trophy race, with 42.0 points, and Santa Clara is second in the women's race with 35.0 points. San Diego has earned 30.5 points and Pepperdine University has 30.0 points in the women's chase.

Overall, the Cougars have 71.0 Commissioner's Cup points halfway through the spring season, which includes menʼs and womenʼs cross country, menʼs and womenʼs soccer, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, and men's and women's tennis. Santa Clara is second with 59.5 points, and San Diego is third with 59.0 points. Saint Mary's sits fourth with 56.5 points, and San Francisco is fifth with 55.5 points. Gonzaga University has 53.5 points, while Pepperdine (46.5), the University of Portland (42.5 points), and Loyola Marymount University (37.0 points) round out the standings.

The next update in the race for the Commissioner's Cup will come after the women's rowing championship, held May 18 in Gold River, Calif.

San Diego has captured an unprecedented five straight WCC Commissioner's Cups.
