BYU Holds Lead in Race for WCC Commissioner's Cup Midway Through Spring

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – At the conclusion of the 2013-14 West Coast Conference men’s and women’s tennis seasons, Brigham Young University holds the top spot in the race for the 2013-14 West Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup – awarded annually to the WCC institution garnering the most success during conference play. With strong showings in golf and tennis, the Cougars have earned 86.0 Cup points. Gonzaga University maintains a narrow second place lead with 66.5 points, while Santa Clara University is right behind with 66.0. 

BYU holds a slim margin for the top spot in the men’s all-sports trophy race, with 33.5 points. Santa Clara is second on the men’s side, with 33.0 points and the University of San Francisco is third with 31.0 men’s points. 

BYU leads the women’s all-sports trophy race in commanding fashion, with 52.5 points. Pepperdine University sits second, with 38.0 points, while Gonzaga is third with 36.5 points.  

Overall, the Cougars have 86.0 Commissioner’s Cup points midway through the spring season, which includes menʼs and womenʼs cross country, menʼs and womenʼs soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis. Gonzaga is second with 66.5 points, Santa Clara is third with 66.0 points and San Francisco is fourth with 64.0 points. Pepperdine is fifth overall with 61.5 points while Saint Mary’s College and the University of San Diego are tied for sixth overall with 55.0 points. Portland (52.0 points), Loyola Marymount University (44.5 points) and University of the Pacific (31.5 points) round out the standings. 

The next update in the race for the Commissioner's Cup will come after the softball regular season (May 11). The final update will be released after the womenʼs rowing championships (May 17, Sacramento) and the baseball championships (May 22-24, Stockton, Calif.) have been completed. 

BYU captured the 2012-13 Commissioner’s Cup, snapping an unprecedented string of five consecutive won by San Diego.
