BASEBALL PLAYER - JAMES MEADOR, UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGOJames Meador helped lead San Diego to a 16-2 record during the month of April, including a program-record 16-game winning streak for the Toreros. The sophomore batted a team-best .413 (31-for-75) on the month, while clubbing five home runs and driving in a conference-best 29 runs. Meador also contributed with 16 runs scored, five doubles, and two triples, en route to leading San Diego to the top of the conference standings. The Ramona, CA native was named WCC Co-Player of the Week on April 21, after batting .438 (7-for-16) and leading USD to a series sweep of Saint Mary's. Meador enters the month of May batting a team-best .370 (60-for-162) with a team-high 46 RBI.
BASEBALL PITCHER - BRIAN MATUSZ, UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGOBrian Matusz continued his dominance of opposing lineups during the month of April, posting a perfect 4-0 record, and notching a miniscule 1.24 ERA. The junior rung up 36 strikeouts in just 29.0 innings of work during April, and held opponents to a .225 batting average. In his four starts against conference opponents, the Cave Creek, AZ native allowed 11 runs, and just four earned runs, while surrendering just 25 total hits. Matusz struck out nine batters in a win at Portland on April 11, before collecting 10 strikeouts in a win over Saint Mary's on April 18. He closed out the month with nine strikeouts in seven innings against LMU on April 25.
MEN'S TENNIS SINGLES - BASSAM BEIDAS, PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITYBassam Beidas is currently riding a 16-match winning streak and is 26-5 for the season playing at the No. 2 position for the Waves. The sophomore was 4-0 for the month of April with two unfinished matches at the WCC Championships. Beidas is currently ranked No. 37 by the ITA and was selected to compete as an individual at the NCAA Division I Men's Singles Tournament, to be held May 21-26, in Tulsa Oklahoma.
MEN'S TENNIS DOUBLES - ANDRE BEGEMANN & OMAR ALTMANN, PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITYThe 24th ranked duo of 2008 WCC Player of the Year, Andre Begemann, and first team All-WCC member, Omar Altmann, won every match they played during the month of April, going 6-0 on the month. Begemann and Altmann qualified to represent Pepperdine in the doubles competition at the NCAA Division I Men's Doubles Tournament. The duo holds a 22-5 overall record.
WOMEN'S TENNIS SINGLES - JENNI HEINSER, UNIVERSITY OF SAN FRANCISCOJenni Heinser was named the 2008 WCC Freshman and Player of the Year after leading the Dons to a fourth place finish at the WCC Tennis Championships. Heinser went 5-1 during the month of April, including a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 87 Pavla Mesterova of LMU in the WCC Championships. Heinser closed the month as the highest ranked WCC player on the circuit, checking in at No. 73 in the ITA listing.
WOMEN'S TENNIS DOUBLES - SYLVIA KOSAKOWSKI & BIANCA DULGHERU, PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITYSeniors Sylvia Kosakowski and Biana Dulgheru posted a 4-0, 20-2 overall, doubles mark in April. The duo helped lead the Waves to their sixth consecutive WCC title, and recorded a 2-0 mark during the WCC Championships. The tandem is currently ranked No. 11 in the latest ITA rankings and was selected to participate in the NCAA Division I Women's Doubles Tournament.
