WCC Commissioner's Cup Update presented by Comcast Cable

May 5, 2010

San Bruno, Calif. - With the conclusion of the West Coast Conference spring championships, the WCC announces another update of the WCC Commissioner's Cup, presented by Comcast Cable. The Commissioner's Cup is an all-sports award presented at the end of each academic year to the league's top performing school in conference play. A Men's and Women's All-Sports Award, recognizing athletic achievement within each gender, is also presented.

The recipient of the Commissioner's Cup is based on a point system, reflecting the finish of each team in conference play. The Men's and Women's All-Sports Awards are given to the schools that accumulate the most points within each particular gender sport. The institution with the highest point total after combining the men's and women's point totals will be honored with the Commissioner's Cup. San Diego was the recipient of the Commissioner's Cup trophy last year, earning its second straight honor.

Upon completion of the WCC Golf Championships, the WCC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships, and the WCC Rowing Championships, San Diego now holds the top spot after winning its first-ever women's rowing championship and finishing in the top three in men's golf, men's tennis and women's tennis. Pepperdine jumped into second after taking home the WCC men's golf and tennis titles and clinching the Women's All-Sports Award, while Saint Mary's moved into third after winning its first ever WCC women's tennis championship. Santa Clara stepped up two spots with top four finishes in golf and tennis. Portland and San Francisco are tied for fifth, while Loyola Marymount and Gonzaga round out the Commissioner's Cup standings.

In the spring, only five WCC women's teams compete in the WCC Golf Championships and WCC Rowing Championships. The conference awards points to competing teams the same way points are distributed at all other WCC Championships but rewards the best finish for a school that competes in both events. A final Commissioner's Cup update will be released and the official trophy will be awarded upon completion the conference baseball season.
