San Diego moves into first place in race for WCC Commissioner's Cup

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- On the heels of its third straight West Coast Conference rowing championship, the University of San Diego has moved into first place in the race for the 2011-12 WCC Commissioner's Cup - awarded annually to the WCC institution garnering the most success during conference play. With one sport (baseball) remaining, San Diego has moved ahead of conference newcomer Brigham Young University in the standings by 2.5 points, as the Toreros seek their fifth straight cup.

After winning Saturday's rowing championship, San Diego earned the women's all-sports trophy with 44.0 points. USD's margin of victory in the women's race was slim; Pepperdine University finished second with 42.5 points on the women's side. BYU was third with 37.0 points, and the University of San Francisco finished fourth with 30.5 points.

Saint Mary's College sits atop the men's all-sports trophy race with 33.0 points. BYU remains second on the men's side with 29.0 points. Loyola Marymount University, the University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University are all tied for third with 25.0 points apiece.

Overall, San Diego has 68.5 Commissioner's Cup points after the conclusion of rowing. The Toreros hold a slight lead over lead BYU, which has 66.0 points. Saint Mary's has moved into third place with 63.0 points, followed by Pepperdine with 58.5 points. San Francisco is fifth with 55.5 points, followed by Santa Clara with 53.0 points and Loyola Marymount with 52.0 points. Gonzaga University (48.5) and the University of Portland (43.0) round out the standings.

The race for the Commissioner's Cup will be decided following the conclusion of the 2012 West Coast Conference baseball regular season, which ends on Sunday, May 27.
