WCC Looks Back at the 2010 Summer Executive and Presidents Council Meetings

June 18, 2010

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- The West Coast Conference held its 2010 Summer Executive and Presidents Council Meetings on June 7-10 in San Francisco. The annual meetings consisted of four days of presentations and discussion with Presidents, Athletic Directors, Senior Woman Administrators, Faculty Athletic Representatives, Institutional Representatives, television partners and corporate sponsors.

The meetings focused on the West Coast Conference's strategic goals of competitiveness, exposure and leadership. The WCC pledged a significant investment in those goals as part of a five-year strategic plan that was approved by both the Executive Council and Presidents Council.

Key components of the strategic plan include:

  • Implementation of men's basketball non-conference scheduling and performance strategies

  • Funding for a branding initiative to help further position, define and articulate the conference's identity

  • Plans to extend the WCC's national and international television platform into the future

  • Launching a conference wide video streaming enhancement program

  • Approval of a Sportsmanship initiative designed by the WCC Sportsmanship Taskforce and the WCC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, featuring an annual award and a media/campus marketing campaign

  • Creation of a minority staffing program to support campus-based diversity efforts

  • Approval of an affiliate membership policy

  • Continued commitment to activation of the WCC voice within the NCAA governance structure

The groups discussed the national television landscape with consultant Chuck Gerber, the progress of the revised WCC governance structure, and were presented a study of conference and national APR results by the WCC Faculty Athletic Representatives.

The conference also hosted its first-ever Honors Dinner to award the 2009-10 Commissioner's Cup presented by Comcast Cable to the University of San Diego. At the Honors Dinner the conference also recognized the 2009-10 Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Postgraduate Scholarship award winners, as well as outgoing Executive Council members.

"I'm pleased with the progress we made, and look forward to moving forward with our strategic plan," West Coast Conference Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich said. "This is an exciting time to be a member of the West Coast Conference."

The WCC Executive Council will hold its fall meetings on October 26-27 in the San Francisco Bay Area.
