WCC Selects Players Of The Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The West Coast Conference awarded three student-athletes with WCC Player of the Week honors on Tuesday. Pepperdine senior outside hitter Julie Rubenstein was selected as the WCC Volleyball Player of the week for her performance in leading the Waves to a 3-0 record to open the 2008 season. Portland's Frankie Lopez was tabbed as the WCC Men's Soccer Player of the Week after scoring four goals and adding an assist as the Pilots posted a 1-0-1 record. Santa Clara's Kendra Perry was named the WCC Women's Soccer Player of the week after scoring both goals in the Broncos' 2-1 overtime win versus then-No. 10 West Virginia.

Weekly Stats: 5.11 kpg, .418 hitting percentage

Rubenstein was named tournament MVP of the Radisson Suites Buena Park Volleyball Classic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton, over the season-opening weekend. The Waves won all three matches (and are off to their first 3-0 start since the 2001 season), beating UNC Greensboro, Delaware and the host Titans, and didn't drop a set in capturing the championship. Rubenstein averaged 5.11 kills (which ranks her #1 in the WCC) in nine sets. She hit .418 (46-8-91) and also had 52.0 points (5.78), 17 digs (1.89), four aces (0.44) and three blocks (0.33). Her best match came against Delaware, a 2007 NCAA Tournament team, when she had 21 kills and a .514 hitting percentage (21-3-35). She had 46 of Pepperdine's 131 kills (35%) over the weekend, and 39 of 92 (42%) during Saturday's two matches.

FRANKIE LOPEZ, POR
Sophomore - Forward/Midfielder

Weekly Stats: 4 goals, 1 assist, 1 GW goal

Lopez had a phenomenal weekend, scoring four goals and handing out an assist as the Pilots claimed the 2008 Nike Invitational title. Lopez, who was named the tournament's offensive MVP, scored both of Portland's goals on Friday during a 2-2 draw with the 10th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies. Both of his strikes came during a four minute stretch in the second half. The first tied the score at 1-1, while the second gave UP a 2-1 lead. On Sunday, Lopez netted two more goals and recorded an assist as Portland dominated Fairleigh Dickinson 4-0. For his efforts, Lopez was named to the national team of the week by Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News.

KENDRA PERRY, SCU
Sophomore - Midfielder

Weekly Stats: 2 goals, 1 GW goal

Perry picked the perfect time to score her first collegiate goals as the sophomore midfielder scored both goals in the Broncos' 2-1 overtime victory versus then-No. 10 West Virginia at the Inn at Saint Mary's Soccer Classic on the campus of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Perry scored the game-winning goal in the 111th minute of play to lift the Broncos to the win. Her first collegiate goal came in the second half to tie the game at 1-1. The second half unassisted goal came in the 50th minute when she scored off a rebound from a free kick save.
