After another successful weekend of non-conference soccer action, four West Coast Conference players earned weekly national honors. Santa Clara's Meagan Snell and San Diego's Veronica Ambort were named to the Soccer America ans Soccer Buzz National Teams of the Week. On the men's side, Gonzaga's George Josten was named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week, while San Francisco's Kevin Long earned College Soccer News National Team of the Week honors.
Snell's playmaking talents were on display once again at the UCLA Women's Cup this past weekend, as the junior forward scored a pair of clutch goals, the first equalizing Friday's contest against No. 9 Connecticut, and the second being the game-winner in Sunday's win over No. 4 Texas A&M. For her efforts in both Bronco wins, Snell was named the WCC Player of the Week. With her goals against the Huskies and Aggies, Snell became only the eighth women's soccer player in Santa Clara history to find the net in four consecutive matches, a streak which is tied for third-longest in program history.
Ambort played a huge role in the Toreros upset win over No. 19 Cal State Fullerton this past Friday. With the match tied at 1-1, the Toreros turned to the senior from Fountain Valley, Calif., and she delivered. In the 104th minute of the match Ambort was able to redirect a cross from Natalie Vinti with her head past the CSF goalkeeper to give USD the 2-1 win. Ambort didn't stop there, as she tacked on her second goal of the week in Sunday's 3-0 blanking of the University of Idaho. With the two wins, the Toreros earned their first national ranking of the season, coming in at No. 22 in the latest NSCAA poll.
Josten enjoyed an outstanding weekend, leading the Zags to wins over Xavier and Oregon State at the Hensor/Zaher Classic in Corvallis, OR. Josten had a hand in six of Gonzaga's seven goals on the weekend, scoring four goals and adding two assists as the Bulldogs improved to 3-2-1. The junior scored twice and assisted on Gonzaga's third goal in Friday's 3-0 win over Xavier, before adding two more goals and another assist as GU knocked off OSU on Sunday, 4-1. Josten moved into the WCC lead with six goals and 15 points on the season.
Long was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for his role in leading the Dons to a 1-0-1 mark at the Penn State Classic over the weekend. The senior was named MVP of the Penn State Classic after scoring the game-winning goal in USF's 2-0 victory over the host Nittany Lions, and assisting on teammate Aaron Chandler's goal in Sunday's 1-1 tie against Ohio State. Long has also led a San Francisco defense that recorded 437 minutes of shutout play to begin the season before conceding a goal to the Buckeyes on Sunday.
