WCC Announces Players Of The Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The West Coast Conference awarded three student-athletes with WCC Player of the Week honors. San Diego junior outside hitter Amy Mahinalani DeGroot was selected as the WCC Volleyball Player of the week after leading the Toreros to a 3-0 record and the USD Tournament title. Portland senior midfielder Leland Wright was tabbed as the WCC Men's Soccer Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in the Pilots' win over Northwest rival Washington. Pepperdine freshman goalkeeper Lacey Heck was selected as the Women's Soccer Player of the Week after posting back-to-back shutouts of No. 23 Tennessee and Washington State.

Weekly Stats: 4.22 kpg, 2.22 dpg, 1.33 bpg percentage

DeGroot, a 6-1 junior from Frenchtown, Mont, helped guide the Toreros to a 3-0 record this past week and to the championship of the USD Tournament. DeGroot lead the team with her 38 kills, recorded 20 digs and had a team-best 12 blocks en route to being named the MVP of the Tournament. On the season, DeGroot has a team-best 125 kills (4.46 kps), is hitting at a .269 clip and is second in digs with 72.

Leland Wright
Senior - Midfielder

Weekly Stats: 1 goal, 1 game-winning goal

Wright tallied the game-winning goal in a 3-1 win over Northwest rival Washington in a nationally televised contest on Fox Soccer Channel. With the match tied at 1-1 entering the second period, Wright provided the decisive tally in the 53rd minute after a nice through ball by teammate Collen Warner. After running past a UW defender, Wright one-timed his attempt to the lower left of the goal and past the diving Husky goalkeeper. A native of Eugene, Ore., Wright now has a goal and an assist on the season.

Freshman - Goalkeeper

Weekly Stats: 2 shutouts, seven saves

Heck pitched back-to-back shutouts against #23 Tennessee and Washington State in her first two collegiate starts last Friday and Sunday, totaling seven saves. She made five in a 2-0 win over the Lady Vols and two in a 1-0 triumph against the Cougars. On the season, Heck sports a 2-1 record and a 0.44 goals against average. Heck is the first Wave to be selected WCC Player of the Week since Sophia Medina was named on Oct. 16, 2006.
