SAN BRUNO, Calif. - West Coast Conference Commissioner Michael Gilleran has announced the hiring of Wendy Guthrie as Associate Commissioner/Senior Woman Administrator. Guthrie, who served as Athletic Director at Seattle University from 2004-06, comes to the WCC after a stint as the Assistant Director for Administration of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University.
"We are extremely happy to welcome Wendy to the West Coast Conference," said Gilleran. "She brings a significant collegiate athletics background to the league office, and I am confident the conference will benefit from her varied experiences in athletics administration."
Guthrie is no stranger to the West Coast Conference, having served as Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator at the University of San Diego from 1996-2002. During her time at USD, Guthrie was a member of the senior management team and served as the tournament director for the 2001 and 2002 West Coast Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships.
A leading architect in establishing the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, which includes four teams from West Coast Conference member institutions, Guthrie has served as commissioner since its inception in 2002. She has also served as a faculty member in the Sport Management Graduate Program at the University of San Francisco.
Guthrie previously worked for a corporate hospitality management group at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. She also held a position as Director of Awards Ceremonies and Torch Run Special Events Manager for the 1995 United States Olympic Festival in Denver, Colorado. While working at the Colorado Sports Council, she served as a sports liaison in canoe/kayak for the USOF-'94.
Guthrie was also the Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator at Saint Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania during the 1995-1996 academic year, and served as an athletic administration fellow at Springfield College (Mass.) from 1993-1994. Guthrie was also the Assistant Director of Admission at Whittier College from 1991-1993.
A native of Salem, Oregon, Guthrie received her bachelor's degree in business administration from Whittier College in 1991, and earned her master's degree in athletic administration from Springfield College in 1995. She was a three-time team MVP on the Whittier cross country team from 1988-1990, and was an all-conference selection in each of those three seasons. Guthrie also earned all-conference track & field honors in 1990.
Guthrie replaces Gloria Nevarez, who served in the West Coast Conference office for five years before accepting an Associate Athletic Director position at the University of Oklahoma in August.
