Santa Clara Sophomore Erik Hurtado Takes Home WCC Player of the Week Honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- With all fall round robin sports starting to wind down, strong performances around the West Coast Conference continue to be recognized. Below are this week's WCC Players of the Week selections.

Volleyball Player of the Week
Shannon Lowell, Saint Mary's, SR, MB
Shannon Lowell had a big week for the Gaels, helping the Gaels go 2-0 on the weekend and improve to 16-6/8-1 WCC. Her line for the weekend was 17 kills on 34 attempts for a .441 hitting percentage, she averaged 2.43 kills per set, while chipping in 11 total blocks, averaging 1.57 blocks per set. With the 11 blocks, Lowell now has 451 career block assists, which is the new SMC all-time record. She already owns the all-time record with total blocks, which is now 503.

Women's Soccer Players of the Week
Tawni Martino, Loyola Marymount, FR, F & Jordan Marada, Saint Mary's, FR, MF

In SMC's only game of the week, Jordan Marada tallied six points (2g, 2a) in a 4-3 double overtime win at Gonzaga on Sunday. In the match, Marada played a role in all four Saint Mary's goals, scoring twice and dishing out an assist on the first two goals for the Gaels. With SMC trailing 2-0 at halftime, Marada assisted Briana Campos' goal just 20 seconds into the second half. With SMC trailing 2-1, Marada's cross to Daelyn Paul resulted in a header goal to tie the game at 2-2. Marada then scored the go ahead goal in the 63rd minute, which was her team-leading fifth of the season. After Gonzaga tied the game, Marada scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime, giving the Gaels their second WCC win of the season and snapping a four-game conference losing streak.
Tawni Martino, Loyola Marymount, FR, F
Freshman Tawni Martino broke the LMU single-season record with her fifth game-winning goal of the season to lift the Lions to their first win in Santa Clara since 2000 on Sunday. Martino was involved in both goals of the 2-0 win over the 10th-ranked Broncos, scoring the first in the 50th minute and then earning the penalty kick that put the game out of reach. It was LMU's first-ever win on the road at a top-10 opponent and the Lions' first win against a team in the top-10 since 2001. Martino has scored in two of the last three games to sit atop the Lions' scoring list with eight goals, the third-most in a single-season in LMU history and most since 2007.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Erik Hurtado, Santa Clara, SO, F
Santa Clara University sophomore forward Erik Hurtado scored twice and distributed an assist, accounting for three of the Broncos' four goals in two weekend victories over San Diego and No. 21 LMU. Hurtado - an All-WCC player as a freshman - put three shots on goal Friday night and scored twice in SCU's 2-1 victory over USD, the first heading in a corner kick and the second was the game-winner via a penalty kick. On Sunday, in a first-place showdown with LMU, Hurtado found teammate Connor Mitchell on a cross that led to the tying goal deep into the second half. Santa Clara would complete the comeback and remain undefeated in WCC play at 5-0-4 and extend its current unbeaten streak to 11 games. Hurtado leads the first-place Broncos in points (10), shots (33) and shots on goal (13).
