With fall sports complete, BYU holds slim lead in race for Commissioner's Cup

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- At the conclusion of the 2011 West Coast Conference fall sports season, WCC newcomer Brigham Young University holds a slight lead in the race for the 2011-12 West Coast Conference Commissionerʼs Cup - awarded annually to the WCC institution garnering the most success during conference play. After winning the men's cross country title and finishing second on the women's side, the Cougars maintain a one-half point edge over the University of San Diego and the University of San Francisco, each of whom are tied for second.

The University of Portland holds the top spot in the men's all-sports trophy race with 14.5 points, after finishing second in cross country and tied for third in men's soccer. Portland leads Santa Clara University by a half-point on the men's side through fall play.

BYU and San Diego are tied in the women's all-sports trophy race, with 20.5 points each. The Toreros, winners of the last four Commissioner's Cups, tied for the WCC title in women's soccer, while finishing second in volleyball. In addition to its cross country success, BYU tied for third in the WCC volleyball standings.

Overall, the Cougars have 29.5 Commissionerʼs Cup points after the fall season, which include menʼs and womenʼs cross country, menʼs and womenʼs soccer, and women's volleyball. The Cougars lead San Diego and San Francisco, who are tied for second with 29.0 points each. In one of the tightest races to date, Portland is fourth overall with 28.0 points, and Santa Clara is fifth (27.0 points). Loyola Marymount University is sixth with 22.5 points, with Saint Mary's College (22.0 points), Pepperdine University (20.5 points), and Gonzaga University (14.5 points) rounding out the standings.

The next update in the race for the Commissioner's Cup, will come after the menʼs and womenʼs basketball seasons conclude at the 2012 Zappos.com WCC Basketball Championships, held February 29-March 5 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
