SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The West Coast Conference and Zappos.com will be conducting the 3rd Annual Zappos.com WCC Shoe Drive to collect shoes for Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization that donates footwear to over 45 states and 125 countries.
The conference-wide partnership began in 2008 after the conference basketball championships moved to a neutral site at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The WCC has collected over 15,200 shoes the past two years that were distributed to those in need both nationally and internationally by Soles4Souls.
"The Zappos.com WCC Shoe Drive would not be possible without the efforts of our school marketing directors and the WCC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)," said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. "The success of this initiative over the last three years is a true testament to our membership's commitment at every level to giving back to our local communities."
The shoe drive is a way for all eight WCC schools to engage in friendly competition and rally around another conference-wide community service project. The WCC and Zappos.com combined to collect over 10,000 shoes in 2010, which was an increase of over 4,800 shoes over the 2009 collection drive.
"It's been amazing to see the support for the Zappos.com WCC Shoe Drive from all of the WCC students, families and communities," said Aaron Magness. "Over 15,000 pairs of shoes have been donated to date - that's a lot of happy toes! The Zappos Family looks forward to continuing to support such an important effort."
This year, shoe donation boxes, provided by Zappos.com, will be placed throughout all eight WCC campuses from mid-November until the 2011 Zappos.com WCC Basketball Championships in March. The institution that collects the most shoes by that time will receive a student fan group party and be honored during a halftime ceremony at the conference championships.
In conjunction with the shoe drive, WCC and Zappos.com will also be inviting 1,000 kids from the Las Vegas After School All-Stars and Clark Country School District to its third annual WCC Kidz Day, Powered by Zappos.com. The event is scheduled to take place outside the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas before the Zappos.com WCC Women's Basketball Championship Game on Monday, March 7th.
In addition, all eight WCC women's basketball teams will be promoting the "Be A Part of It" series, which was made possible by the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Grant. The "Be A Part of It" series encourages WCC fans to support their favorite WCC women's basketball teams both on and off the court by taking part in the teams' community service initiatives. Some women's basketball teams will be specifically promoting the Zappos.com WCC Shoe Drive as part of this campaign, and listed below are the dates on those campuses.
