SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named Gonzaga freshman Jordan Smith the West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week and the Pepperdine duo of Lautaro Pane and Pedro Iamachkine the Doubles Team of the Week.
Smith posted a strong showing in Gonzaga’s lone match of the week at San Diego, beating the Toreros’ Filip Vittek 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. The win is his team-leading 15th of the year, and that mark is the best among all freshmen in the conference. Smith has now earned three wins against players from nationally-ranked squads after taking down Vittek, a first team All-WCC selection last year.
The Pepperdine sophomore duo of Pane and Iamachkine led the Waves to two wins at the USF Quad Tourney last weekend to earn their third honors of the season. First against 17th-ranked South Florida on Friday, the pair dropped Sasha Gozun and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy 6-4 from the number two doubles position. Then after moving up to the number one doubles position on Saturday, Pane and Iamachkine bested Joao Gauer and Remi Chancerel of Florida Atlantic with a 6-4 final mark. The pair went 2-1 on the weekend and now holds a 20-8 overall record throughout the 2015-16 season.
