SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Gonzaga redshirt sophomore defender Austin Giftopoulos has been named the West Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

The defender came back for his redshirt sophomore season after missing all but six games with a season-ending injury last year and scored a goal and an assist in GU’s 4-1 win over Illinois-Chicago.

After playing all 110 minutes of an overtime draw with Bradley on Friday, Giftopoulos played all 90 on Saturday in the victory. He helped the defense hold both opponents to just one goal and was also instrumental on the offensive end against UIC.

Giftopoulos helped Ben White get the scoring started with a perfect cross for the assist in the fourth minute. Then in the 14th minute he knifed his way into the box and put home a cross from teammate Sam Olson in what turned out to be the game winner on his first career goal.

Also Nominated: Jackson Jellah, Portland
