SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named Gonzaga senior Samantha Polayes the West Coast Conference Women’s Singles Player of the Week and the Bulldogs duo of Polayes and Sophie Whittle the Women’s Doubles Team of the Week.

Polayes went 3-1 at No. 2 singles during the Zags’ spring break matches with her second win of the week, a three-setter against Anna Dollar of Liberty, elevating her into No. 1 on Gonzaga’s all-time singles wins list. Polayes now stands at 76 wins in her Bulldog career, passing former Zag great Sarah Ust for the top spot – a mark that has stood since 2001. That win also clinched the Zags’ 4-3 win over the Lady Flames. In the non-conference finale against Weber State, Polayes’ 6-0, 6-4 win over Kristi Elmer clinched the dual for the Zags’ ninth win in a row, the program’s longest according to available records. Overall, Polayes has 15 wins on the year.

The honor for Polayes breaks a string of five consecutive weeks that saw conference freshmen win the WCC Singles Player of the Week honor. Polayes is the first non-freshman to win the award in 2016. She also becomes the first Gonzaga women’s tennis player to earn WCC Singles Player of the Week honors in program history.

Polayes and teammate Sophie Whittle earn the Doubles Team of the Week in a weekend that saw them become the Gonzaga doubles team single-season wins record holders. Their 6-2 win over Sidnay Huck and Emily Mazzola of Toldeo was their 20th of the year, setting the program’s single-season record for doubles wins. The win was the12th in a row for Polayes and Whittle, who went unbeaten from October to March. The duo picked up the first doubles wins against both Boston and Weber State while their win against Toledo was the one that clinched the doubles point. At 21 wins this season, the duo hold the most in the WCC by a doubles pair this season.

This is also the first Gonzaga duo to win the Doubles Team of the Week honor in program history.
