SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named Loyola Marymount sophomore Errol Smith the West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week and the Pepperdine duo of Pedro Iamachkine and Stefan Menichella the Doubles Team of the Week.
It is the first weekly honor this season for both Smith and the Waves duo of Iamachkine and Menichella.
Smith went 3-0 on the week, helping guide LMU to a 3-0 week that included victories over San Francisco, Santa Clara and Gonzaga to clinch a spot in the WCC Championship. Smith played at No. 2 singles on Friday and Sunday against USF and Gonzaga while competing at No. 3 singles on Saturday against Santa Clara. Smith’s week started with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over USF’s Ryan Marker before he topped Andrew Gu of Santa Clara, 6-3, 6-0, to help the Lions clinch the spot in the WCC Championship. Playing in his third match in as many days, Smith defeated Gonzaga’s Ruadhan O’Sullivan, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to clinch the Lion win and cap his 3-0 week.
The first time duo of Menichella and Iamachkine were instrumental in the Waves’ success this week, propelling the team to two WCC victories en route to Doubles Team of the Week honors. The pair began with a 4-0 sweep over Santa Clara on Friday before a 4-2 win over San Francisco on Saturday to close out the 2016 regular season. In the number two slot, the pair first downed Ashot Khacharyan and Max Heerinckx with a 6-3 win to clinch the doubles point for the Waves and send the home team into singles play with a 1-0 advantage.
