SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for December 7, 2015.
WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – LAUREN NICHOLSON, SR., G – SAINT MARY'S
Senior guard Lauren Nicholson led Saint Mary's to the Cal Classic Championship taking home MVP honors as the Gaels defeated two programs from the power conferences in the Pac-12 and Big East. The week also included Nicholson tying a career-high in single-game points and tallying career point No. 1,000.
After the Gaels took a tough loss in overtime to begin the week as Nicholson scored 23 points, Saint Mary’s bounced back to stun No. 18 California 64-63 and also take down a strong Villanova squad 67-60 in the title game of the Cal Classic.
In the win against the Golden Bears, Nicholson scored nine points, to go along with a career-high seven assists and a season-high seven rebounds. On SMC’s final possession at Cal with the Gaels down one, Nicholson drove the lane and found Sydney Raggio who hit the game-winner with 2.7 seconds remaining.
In the win over Villanova, Nicholson took over the game late, hitting on 11-of-15 from the field for a career-high tying 29 points. SMC was down 11 in the third quarter but Nicholson directed a 13-1 run and got the Gaels in-line for the victory.
For the week, Nicholson averaged 20.3 ppg, went 23-of-25 (92 percent) from the free-throw line, added 4.3 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game.
