No. 1 Pepperdine Claims Inaugural WCC Pairs of the Month (March)

Freshmen Anika Wilson and Madalyn Roh went 12-0 at No. 4 for the top-ranked Waves

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – After beginning the season this month ranked second on the AVCA Beach Coaches Poll, the Waves have since moved up to the number one spot with the help of freshman fours pair, Anika Wilson and Madalyn Roh. For their efforts, Wilson and Roh collect the first West Coast Conference Pair of the Month accolades.

The duo has helped Pepperdine defeat six nationally ranked opponents including, then-top-ranked USC (3-2), third-ranked Hawai’i (4-1), fourth-ranked Long Beach State (5-0), sixth-ranked UCLA (5-0), sixth-ranked Arizona (3-2) and eighth-ranked Georgia State (4-1). The tandem is undefeated so far this season at 15-0 with 12 of those victories being by two-set decisions.

To open the month on March 5 and 6 with the Zuma Classic, Roh and Wilson first downed No. 4 LBSU’s Myka Wilson and Zoyia Konstantaopoulou 19-21, 21-17 and 17-15, before defeating No. 1 USC’s Abril Bustamante and Jenna Belton 21-13 and 21-19. Closing out the Zuma Classic, the pair put down Kawai Schucht and Hannah Rooks of No. 3 Hawai’i by 21-12, 13-21 and 15-11 decision, before exceling over No. 6 UCLA’s Julie Cansani and Laurel Weaver with 21-9 and 21-16 results.

Roh and Wilson then helped the Waves remained undefeated throughout the next five matches at the College of Charleston Invitational. First, the pair helped the Waves to a 4-1 win over No. 8 Georgia State with a 21-14, 21-17 win over Milani Pickering and Delaney Rohan. To close out the tourney, the Waves earned four more 5-0 sweeps over the competition, beginning with a 21-19, 21-10 victory over Kennedy Madison and Lauren Hollman of COC. The Waves collected two set victories over Mercer (vs. Morgan MacGilvary/Madison Kerr – 21-8, 21-17), Alabama Birmingham (Michaela Reesor/Avery Hoven – 21-16, 21-17) and UNC Wilmington (Sarah Kelly/Halley Hunt – 21-7, 21-9).

Back at home against Cal Poly and Nebraska, the Waves picked up two more 5-0 sweeps with the help of Roh and Wilson’s 21-11 and 21-6 win over Casey Carroll and Bailey Roach of Cal Poly and the 21-17, 21-10 win over Kenzie Maloney and Briana Holman of Nebraska. At sixth-ranked UCLA, despite the 2-3 outcome, the pair defeated Reily Buechler and Zana Muno with 21-18, 18-21 and 20-18 results.

The 2016 WCC Beach Volleyball Championship is scheduled for April 22-23 at Ocean Beach Park in Santa Monica, Calif.
