SANTA MONICA, Calif. – The Pepperdine beach volleyball squad won the inaugural West Coast Conference Championships Saturday afternoon at the Ocean Park Beach Volleyball Courts, finishing with a perfect 3-0 record at the double elimination event.
After defeating Saint Mary’s with a 3-2 victory Friday in the first round of the West Coast Conference tournament, the Waves swept both Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary’s en route to becoming the first ever WCC champions.
After securing the 5-0 sweep over the Lions, the Waves entered the championship match-up with the Gaels of the Saint Mary’s.
In the championship match, the Watves went up 1-0 with a dominating win on court five from senior Samantha Cash and junior Sarah Seiber, as the pair bested Hannah Liserra and Alex O’Sullivan 21-7 and 21-6 for the win.
Pepperdine extended the victory with a 21-11, 21-13 victory from sophomore Corinne Quiggle and freshman Skylar Caputo on court three over Alexis Salmons and Emily Bible. The Waves clinched the title with a 21-14, 21-11 win on court four, delivered from freshmen pair Madalyn Roh and Anika Wilson to Madi Wilkerson and Linsdsey Calvin.
Then the Waves’ one and two pairs completed the sweep on courts one and two, first with a two-set 21-11, 21-15 victory on court two from junior Delaney Knudsen and freshman Kaity Bailey before court one completed the day to take the victory with a19-21, 21-11 and 21-12 score by Taylor Racich and Heidi Dyer.
Saint Mary's began the day with a 3-2 win against San Francisco before eliminating Loyola Marymount 3-2 in the consolation bracket to make its way to the championship game.
