GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Pepperdine beach volleyball team finished the 2016 campaign on day two of the inaugural NCAA Championship, falling 3-2 to fourth-seeded UCLA at the Gulf Shores Public Beach.

The Waves made history in multiple ways this season, becoming one-of-eight teams in the first-ever NCAA Championship field and ended the season one of the final five teams in the tournament.  The squad tied the school record for most wins in a single season with a 20-5 overall record (went 20-1 in 2013) and earned the inaugural West Coast Conference Championship title.  The Waves will graduate three seniors: Taylor Racich, Samantha Cash and Sophie Asprey.

Sophomore Corinne Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) and freshman Skylar Caputo (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) began the match with the first win of the day for either team, taking down the Bruins’ Izzy Carey and Elise Zappia with a 21-19, 21-17 win on court three.  The duo ends the 2016 effort with a 21-4 overall record, including a 20-4 record in the number three position.

Senior Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and freshman Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) then fell on court one to twins Megan and Nicole McNamara in two sets.  The pair finishes the 2016 season with a 16-8 overall record in the number one position for the Waves.

Pepperdine then extended the lead once again for the Waves to 2-1 as junior Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and freshman Kaity Bailey (Ojai, Calif./Villanova Preparatory School) finish off Kamila Tan and Ivey Schmitt 22-20 and 21-19 on court two.  The partnership closed out the season with an 18-6 overall record for the team from the number two position.

The final two matches finished quickly and almost simultaneously, first with freshmen pair Madalyn Roh(Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS) and Anika Wilson (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS) fighting hard to tie the second set after a 21-19 loss in the first set.  After a 21-21 tie, the Bruins’ Zana Muno and Jessyka Ngauamo pull away, however, and finish off the set 23-21 to tie the overall match 2-2 and put the focus on court five.  Roh and Wilson closed out the season with a successful 21-3 overall record, including a 21-2 record from the number four position for the Waves.

On court five, enior Samantha Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) and junior Sarah Seiber(Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS/Arizona) had gone down with a 21-19 loss in the first set, but worked back to tie the match with a 21-15 win in set two over UCLA’s Julie Consani and Reily Buechler.  It went to the wire in the third, but the Bruins ended with the 15-12 victory to secure to overall 3-2 win and put the Waves out of the NCAA Championhip.  Cash and Seiber ended the season with a 21-4 overall record from the number five position for Pepperdine.
