SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland junior goalkeeper Paul Christensen has been named the West Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Christensen didn’t allow a goal to run his shutout streak to three straight games as the Pilots picked up a pair of wins at Merlo Field, extending their winning streak to seven consecutive.
Christensen was masterful on Friday night against Loyola Marymount as the Pilots claimed a 1-0 win. The junior had three saves total, which included a diving save to open the second half on a well-hit LMU shot from distance in the 48th minute. Christensen kept the game at 0-0 with another stellar save in the 62nd minute when he punched an LMU free kick over the crossbar, and he came through with a clutch save in the 90th minute after the Pilots had taken a 1-0 lead. The goalkeeper provided three more saves on Sunday as the Pilots rolled to a 4-0 win over the San Diego Toreros, giving him five blank sheets on the year.
Christensen and the Pilots have not allowed a goal in more than 270 minutes, matching the legendary 1988 Portland team for the best conference start ever (5-0). The Pilots have the best record after 15 games (11-3-1) since the 1995 team, which was the last Portland team to advance to the College Cup.
