SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland junior midfielder Matt Coffey has been named the final West Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Coffey scored the only goal of the game as the Pilots won 2016 West Coast Conference Championship by defeating the Saint Mary’s Gaels, 1-0, on the final night of the regular season at Merlo Field on Saturday. It’s the first WCC title for the Pilots since 2002, and Portland clinches a berth to the NCAA Playoffs for the first time since 2009.
Coffey’s goal came in the sixth minute when Rey Ortiz found him with a quick free kick. The midfielder took a couple of touches towards the right post before burying a shot into the upper 90 from a tough angle to hand the home side the early 1-0 lead.
Coffey, who nearly scored his second of the game in the 68th minute when he forced the SMC keeper into making a diving save, now has three goals on the year, and his goal against the Gaels was his first game-winner.
