SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland forward Eddie Sanchez has been named the West Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced Monday.
Sanchez earns his second honor of the season after recording a hat trick in Portland’s WCC opener at Gonzaga Sunday afternoon.
The Pilots exploded for five second-half goals, all coming within a 13-minute span, as Portland picked up a key 5-1 road win to begin conference play. Sanchez’s first goal was world class as he bent a shot into the upper 90 on a free kick in the 60th minute from 25 yards out. The goal gave the Pilots a 2-1 lead after the home side led 1-0 at the half, and it proved to be his first game-winner of the year.
One minute later, Sanchez notched his second goal on a penalty, and he completed the hat trick in the 66th minute with his third strike into the right corner of the net, giving the senior a total of three goals in a six-minute span.
His three goals give him six on the season, which is tied for the team-high. He also becomes the first Pilot to register a hat trick since Brandon Zambrano accomplished the feat almost exactly two years ago.
Also Nominated: Remi Prieur, Saint Mary’s; Patrick McGrath, San Diego; David Garrett, San Francisco
