SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its Rawlings Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for March 21, 2016.
WEST COAST CONFERENCE RAWLINGS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – ANTHONY GONSOLIN, SR., OF/P – SAINT MARY'S
Senior outfielder Anthony Gonsolin was instrumental over the weekend in pushing Saint Mary's to its first series win at San Diego in 22 years, and also reached base twice and scored a run earlier in the week to help the Gaels to a 3-1 week.
Gonsolin hit .533 in four games during the week, including going 7 for 12 (.583) with three RBIs, four runs scored and three extra-base hits in the three-game road series at San Diego. Gonsolin hit a three-run home run in game one of the San Diego series to put the Gaels up 3-0 early en route to a 9-0 series-opening win, and only needed a triple that night to complete the cycle. Gonsolin was 4 for 5 with two runs scored on Sunday during the Gaels' 9-1 rout of the WCC preseason favorites to clinch the series.
Although it did not factor in the award selection, Gonsolin also made two appearances on the mound during the week, throwing five scoreless innings and striking out five. He started Tuesday's 6-1 Saint Mary's win over defending Mountain West Conference champion Nevada, throwing three scoreless innings in a no-decision. He threw the final two innings Sunday at San Diego, holding the Toreros scoreless to close the series.
Also Nominated: Brennon Anderson, BYU; Jeff Bohling, Gonzaga; TC Florentine, Santa Clara; Danny Mayer, Pacific
WEST COAST CONFERENCE RAWLINGS PITCHER OF THE WEEK – CORBIN BURNES, JR., RHP – SAINT MARY'S
Junior righthander Corbin Burnes nearly threw a perfect game in Friday's series opener at San Diego, retiring the first 22 batters he faced in 7 1/3 perfect innings, then recorded 26 outs before surrendering his first hit, narrowly missing a no-hitter while losing a perfect game in the eighth inning en route to a 9-0, two-hit, complete game shutout victory at Fowler Park.
Burnes improved to 3-0 on the year while throwing less than 100 pitches in his first career shutout. He only faced four three-ball counts all game, and didn’t see his first until the bottom of the seventh. He retired 18 of 27 batters with three pitches or less with four strikeouts and one walk in a game that lasted less than 2 1/2 hours. The performance dropped his season ERA to a team-best 2.23 and lowered his batting average against to .226
