SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its Rawlings Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 4, 2016.
WEST COAST CONFERENCE RAWLINGS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – COLTON SHAVER, SO., DH/IF – BYU
Sophomore designated hitter Colton Shaver hit .545 (6-11) with a double, home run and nine RBI leading BYU to a West Coast Conference road sweep at Portland. Shaver’s productive week elevated his batting average from .453 to .464 and the sophomore is now batting .500 in nine league games.
Shaver had one of the three-game winning RBI this week for 23-3 BYU to help it keep a first-place standing at 7-2. In game one at Portland, Shaver hit his team-leading 7th homer, a two-run shot for an 8-1 lead. Shaver also doubled in the third to score a teammate as part of his five RBI for the evening.
In game two at Portland he had a two-out RBI that gave BYU its initial 1-0 lead. In the series finale, the Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the third when Shaver hit a two-run single with the bases loaded. Shaver also laid down a bunt to lead off the seventh, the fourth bunt single of the day for BYU. His sacrifice fly in the fifth inning was the game-winning RBI.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE RAWLINGS PITCHER OF THE WEEK – JOHNNY YORK, JR., LHP – SAINT MARY'S
Junior lefthander Johnny York struck out eight and walked none Saturday, leading the Gaels to a 1-0 win against longtime rival Santa Clara at Stephen Schott Stadium. It was the first complete game shutout for York.
After stranding runners in scoring position in each of the second through fifth innings, York settled down to retire 13 of the final 14 batters he faced, including two swinging strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth to end the game. The complete game was York’s longest career outing after reaching eight innings twice previously. He threw eight shutout innings on Feb. 20 against Seattle University in a 1-0 win.
The game two win clinched the three-game series for Saint Mary’s. It was the Gaels’ first series victory over Santa Clara since 2013 and their first in the South Bay since 2012.
