The USF women's cross country team placed fourth, while the men placed fifth in the USF Invitational Saturday morning in Golden Gate Park.

In the opening weekend of the NCAA cross country season, the Dons women's team was led by sophomore Mary Verran who placed 13th overall with a time of 18:55. Verran was followed by senior Lucy Miller (16th) and freshman Nicole Bowler (18th), as top 20 finishers.

The men were led by senior Kenny Sparks who finished 18th overall with a time of 26:53. Finishing behind Sparks was junior Jordan Zwick (26th) and junior Alex Nelson (30th).

The Dons, who held out six of their top seven returning runners on the women's team and two of the top five returning men, will be back in action in two weeks at the Sundodger Invitational, one of the toughest fields the Dons will face this season.
