Freshman Lauren Martinez made an impressive collegiate debut as she finished 25th to lead the Pepperdine women's cross country team to an 11th place finish at the Cal State Fullerton "Season Opener" at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea, California on Saturday. Senior Chris Gaudreau finished 77th on the men's side as the Waves placed 13th.
Martinez completed the five-kilometer women's course in a time of 19:20. Sophomore Amanda Gordon finished 74th in a time of 20:26. Gaudreau covered the eight-kilometer men's course in a time of 28:06.
Concordia University (Irvine) won both the men's and women's team competition in the collegiate division. The Concordia men placed four runners in the top 19 spots on the way to 89 points to finish ahead of Loyola Marymount (113) and Cal State Fullerton (148). The Eagles' women had five runners in the top 17 for a total of only 44 points to easily outdistance runners-up Cal Poly Pomona (118) and Cal State Fullerton (129).
The collegiate winner of the men's race was Aron Rono of Azusa Pacific, who covered the course in 24:48.20 to finish 14 seconds ahead of Carlos Handler of Concordia. The women's winner was Laura Mickelson of Loyola Marymount in 17:10.90 with Karla Albunez of Cal State L.A. runner-up at 18:26.10.
Pepperdine returns to action next Saturday when it travels to San Diego for the University of San Diego Invitational.
