Sept. 3, 2006
Fullerton, Calif. - In her first competition since running at the 2006 NCAA National Track Championships in June, Loyola Marymount's Laura Mickelson picked up where she left off, winning the 2006 Cal State Fullerton Cross Country Invitational title Saturday. The title run came in the Lions' 2006 opener and led the LMU women to a second place team finish. The LMU men also posted a top-five finish.
Mickelson opened her junior season with the first place finish, crossing the 5000m line in 17:10.9. Senior Kristen Gonzalez followed in 18:54.4, placing her ninth in the collegiate division. The two led the Lions to a second place team finish with a team time of 1:35.00. That team time set a new LMU course record, shattering the previous best of 1:43.36 set back in 2002.
In 2005 at the same meet, the women's squad had an 80 second gap between runners three and four. Today, the Lions got their two through five runners across the line in a gap of just 54 seconds.
The men's team recorded an 8000m time of 2:17.16, good for fifth place among the 15 collegiate teams. The Lions got their first five runners across in just 44 seconds.
Jonathan MacNeil (27:33.9, 32nd place), Mo Elmi (27:39.9, 35th place), and Paul Beckwith (27:41.0, 37th place) rounded out the top-five for the Lions. Three of the top-five, including the leader Brennan, are newcomers to the men's squad.
The men's squad improved to the top-five finish after taking 10th place at the same meet last season.
Next up for the Lions is the USD Invitational in San Diego, Calif. next Saturday. Race time is set for 9:00 a.m.
