Cross Country Runs To Records In Chico Invitational

Oroville, CA - The Saint Mary's cross country team opened its 2007 season in impressive fashion with the men and women placing third in the Chico Invitational from the Lake Oroville Forebay Aquatic Center Saturday morning. Saint Mary's harriers Karrie Hagedorn and Tess Grannemann etched their names in the SMC record books.

Hagedorn started the season right where she left off with another stellar race. The junior placed 10th overall with a 6k time of 22:50, which ranks sixth all-time at SMC. Grannemann made a splash in her first collegiate race for SMC, placing 19th with a time 23:31. The time ranks eighth all-time.

Maddie Dengler and Jade Lewis closely followed in their Saint Mary's debut. Dengler finished with a time of 25:29 while Lewis crossed the line in 25:50. Alex Bettencourt finished with a 27:09 while Jenna Zack crossed the line in 27:42. Rosie Kovacic rounded out the scoring Gaels with a 27:47.

On the men's side, Mario Mendoza placed 24th with a 27:32 in his first race as a Gael. Nick Shea followed with a 28:31 and Mark Blucher finished with a 29:41 in their first collegiate race.

Sophomore David Stiles crossed the line in 30:25 while Eric Villegas and Peter Mathieu followed suit with a 31:24 and 31:46, respectively. Newcomer Bradley Alban rounded out the scorers with a 31:58.

Saint Mary's will continue the season at the Aztec Invitational. The Gaels will begin the race on Saturday, September 15 at 9 a.m. from Balboa Park in San Diego.
