SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University junior Colby Litzenberger won his second straight race, but it was Whitworth College that captured both the men's and women's races at the Whitworth Short Course cross country meet Saturday.
Litzenberger, who won the West Coast Conference Pier Park Preview last weekend in Portland, Ore., covered the 3200 meter course in 10:06 for a 6-second win over Dusty Caseria of the host Pirates.
Sophomore Brett Withers was fifth in 10:26, freshman Darrick Thompson was eighth in 10:37, with sophomore Brian Slamkowski and redshirt freshman Matt Bejar 10th and 11th, respectively, with identical times of 10:40 as Gonzaga had five runners in the top 11. That wasn't enough to topple the Pirates, however, as the hosts took a 23-32 victory in the men's race.
On the women's side, freshman Laura Volcheff had the best Bulldog finish, taking fifth in 12:48 over the 3200 meter course. Brittany O'Regan, another freshman was 10th in 12:58. Jo E Mayer led a near Whitworth sweep to win the race in 12:21 as Whitworth had seven of the top eight finishers on their way to a 16-47 win over the Bulldogs.
"This is a good race because it let's us work on some things," Gonzaga head coach Kevin Swaim said. "It's more like a training session against competition where we set some goals for strategies we want to develop that will help us as the season progresses. Obviously, we want to do well but we also want to gear ourselves for the rest of the season."
The Bulldogs will be at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore., next Saturday.
