Cross Country Sprints Through Paradise

Kane'ohe, O'ahu - The Saint Mary's cross country team got a dose of speed in the short races as the men's squad finished fourth and the women placed sixth at the Big Wave Invitational Saturday morning. Karrie Hagedorn and Mario Mendoza were the usual suspects up front for the Gaels.

Hagedorn blitzed the 4k course in a time of 15:23 to place 10th overall. Freshman Tess Grannemann followed with a time of 16:06 for a 22nd place finish. The freshman duo of Maddie Dengler and Jade Lewis followed with times of 17:07 and 17:26, respectively.

The trio of Alex Bettencourt, Jenna Zack and Rosie Kovacic rounded out the women harriers. The three finished with an 18:45, 18:50 and 18:51, respectively.

Mendoza paced the men on the 5k course with a 16:48 to place fourth overall. Nick Shea finished in fifth with a 16:52.

Freshman Mark Blucher crossed the line with a 17:40 while junior David Stiles followed with an 18:10. Daniel Reyes and Eric Villegas rounded out the men's squad with an 18:53 and 19:18, respectively.

Saint Mary's will continue its 2007 campaign by participating in the annual Stanford Invitational. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, September 29 at 5 p.m. from the Stanford Golf Course.
