USF Cross Country And Track And Field Welcomes Strongest Recruiting Class In Program History

Head coach Helen Lehman-Winters announced the signing of the strongest recruiting class in USF cross country and track and field history Thursday afternoon.

With both the men's and women's team finishing second last year in the WCC Cross Country Championships and both teams scoring the most points in program history at the Independent Conference Track Championships last month, the future of USF cross country and track and field will only get stronger.

Signing National Letters of Intent on the women's side were Zita Mezei, a transfer from Villanova University, Carly Holman from Bishop Carroll High School in Alberta Canada, Nicole Bowler from Del Oro High School in Loomis California, Arianna Edwards from Southridge High School in Beaverton Oregon, and Gabriel Harrington from M.I.C.D.S High School in St. Louis Missouri.

On the men's side, Lehman-Winters signed Luke Wiltshire from Central Catholic High School in Portland Oregon.

Zita Mezei Will transfer from Villanova University to the Hilltop after coming to the United States from Mezokovesd Hungary. While at Villanova during the 2004 outdoor season, Mezei finished 10th in the 1500m in the Big East Championships and ran a leg on the Big East winning 4x800m relay team that finished first. During her 2004 indoor season, Mezei was fourth in the 1000m Big East Championships and ran a leg on the third place 4x800m relay team. In 2006, Mezei was sixth in the indoor mile in the Big East Championships and ran a leg on the second place distance medley relay team.

Her personal bests are 9:24 (3000m), 4:16.97 (1500m) and 2:06 (800m). "We are very excited to add Zita Mezei to our 2007-08 team. She is extremely talented and is highly motivated to contribute to our program her at USF," said Lehman-Winters.

Carly Holman Was fourth in the 800m and sixth in the 1500m at the Canadian National Legion Championship. Also placed first in the 800m and 400m in the indoor Provincial Championships in 2006. Her personal bests are 4:46 in the1500m and 2:15.20 in the 800m.

Nicole Bowler Will join the Dons from Del Oro High School after placing fifth at the Sac Juaquin Section Championships this past season. Has personal bests of 2:19 (800m) and 5:06.95 (1600m) came in only her first season of running track.

Arianna Edwards Placed seventh in the 2007 6A Oregon State Championships, along with running a leg on the 6A 4x400m championship relay team for Southridge High School in Beaverton Oregon. Her personal bests are 2:19 in the 800m and 57.69 in the 400m.

Gabriel Harrington Will join the Dons from M.I.C.D.S High School in St. Louis Missouri, after being a three time Missouri State class three finalist in the 100m and 200m. Her personal bests in the 100m (12.21), 200m (25.22) and 400m (55.73) would put her at the top of the USF records books in those events.

Luke Wiltshire Will join the Dons from one of the most successful programs in Oregon. Was seventh in the 2006 6A Oregon State Cross Country Championships, helping his high school to a State Championship. His personal bests are 1:56.00 in the 800m and 4:25.9 in the 1600m. "Luke is an excellent addition to our men's middle distance corps and he has the ability to make an immediate contribution to our cross country team in the fall, said Lehman-Winters. "He comes from an extremely successful prep program and we are thrilled to have him on board next season."
